The Demon and Danneel

Description

While attending the recent All Hell Breaks Loose convention here is Sydney, I had the opportunity to speak to the lovely and talented Danneel Harris. At the time, I had put in my black sclera contacts, so I'm glad she seemed to find them interesting rather than being completely creeped out by them as some people are.

The contacts were pretty popular at the convention as they give the same look as some of the demons in Supernatural.

I get a lot of questions about them, due to them being scleras, so I thought I would list a few of the most common!

1. Can I see out of them?

Yes, I can. The center of each contact has a clear space to see through, that is slightly visible when close up. The contacts do cut into the peripheral vision a little, especially in low light situations, but they don't affect my vision at all otherwise.

2. Do they hurt? Are they comfortable?

It's going to vary from person to person, like all contacts, but I find them very comfortable and they don't bother my eyes at all. Because they cover the whole eye, the edge of the contact sits in an area of the eye that has less nerves so I find them sometimes MORE comfortable than standard contacts. The only problem I have ever had with them is they can get a little dry and that was only after I had been wearing them for about 5 hours.

3. Are they difficult to get in and out?

They are harder than standard contacts because you have to physically slide them up and under your top eyelid before pulling the bottom lid out to let it settle in place. It doesn't hurt and I don't find it uncomfortable, and it doesn't take me long, but I do not recommend them for anyone who is the slightest bit 'eye shy'. If you have trouble with normal contacts, then scleras are probably not for you. Getting them out is pretty easy...you either just gently grab them between two fingers and pop it out or slide a finger gently under one edge and remove it that way.

As with any and all products you put in your eyes, make sure that you're not going to have a bad reaction to them before you try. Get proper contacts and products and always make sure that your hands and the contacts themselves are very clean. Do your research and see an optometrist first if you have eye problems or vision issues. Don't take stupid chances with your eyes!
